Molecules with ALMA at Planet-forming Scales (MAPS). IV. Emission Surfaces and Vertical Distribution of Molecules

The Molecules with ALMA at Planet-forming Scales (MAPS) Large Program provides a unique opportunity to study the vertical distribution of gas, chemistry, and temperature in protoplanetary disks around IM Lup, GM Aur, AS 209, HD 163296, MWC 480. By using asymmetry molecular line emission relative disk major axis, we infer height (z) above midplane as function radius (r). Using this method, measure emitting surfaces for suite CO isotopologues, HCN, C2H. We find that 12CO traces most elevated regions , while from less abundant 13CO C18O probes deeper into altitudes . C2H HCN have lower opacities signal-to-noise ratios, making surface fitting more difficult, could only be reliably constrained 480, i.e., relatively close planet-forming midplanes. determine peak brightness temperatures optically thick isotopologues use these trace 2D structures. Several profiles show dips or height, some which are associated gaps rings and/or continuum emission.
